Periodontal Treatment

At Maroubra Family Dental, we believe that good oral health is essential for good overall health. If you are suffering from bleeding gums, bad breath, gum recession or tooth mobility, you might have an infection in your gums called periodontal disease. This not only puts the health of your teeth in danger, but people who have periodontal disease might be putting themselves at a higher risk of developing serious medical conditions.

Healthy Gums for Healthy Teeth

Many people are unaware that they have gum disease because, in its earliest stages, it often has no signs or symptoms. As this insidious disease continues to take hold, you might begin to experience the following:

  • Bleeding after brushing or flossing
  • Gums that are red, swollen and tender
  • Persistent bad breath that no amount of brushing seems to fix
  • Pockets around the gums where they have pulled away from the tooth
  • The formation of pus in the pockets around the tooth

Ultimately, gum disease can lead to tooth loss if it is not treated.

The Periodontal Evaluation

As part of your regular dental examination, our team will perform a periodontal evaluation to ensure the health of your gums. We will also ask you for some information about your medical history as certain conditions can put you at higher risk, including pregnancy and diabetes, and the use of some medications. Smokers and tobacco users are also at a higher risk.

By measuring the pockets in the gums around your teeth, we can tell whether your gums fit snugly around your teeth as they are supposed to. If pockets have formed, this makes it easy for bacteria to settle in. We will also ask about any signs of gum disease you might be experiencing.

Periodontal Treatment

The way your gum disease is treated will depend on what stage it is in. In the beginning, gum disease is referred to as gingivitis, and this is a treatable condition. Our gentle hygienists can perform a deep cleaning to help bring your gums back to health.

In its more advanced stage, periodontitis, the condition can be managed with regular visits to Maroubra Family Dental. We usually recommend more frequent dental cleanings to keep your gum disease from getting any worse.
